What Is Apophyllite?
“Apophyllite” is not currently the approved name of one single mineral species. It is a convenient group or commercial term covering several closely related hydrated silicates.

Color does not prove species. Green crystals are often labeled fluorapophyllite-(K), but reliable distinction among group members may require chemical analysis.

Is Apophyllite a Zeolite?
Apophyllite is frequently displayed and sold beside zeolites, but it is not a zeolite mineral.
Both occur as late-stage cavity minerals in basalt and may crystallize from low-temperature fluids. Apophyllite is a hydrated phyllosilicate with a distinctive layered framework, whereas zeolites have open aluminosilicate structures with exchangeable cations and channel water.

How Apophyllite Forms
The finest commercial specimens commonly form inside gas cavities in basaltic lava. After the lava solidifies, mineral-rich fluids move through fractures and deposit crystals on cavity walls.
Apophyllite often crystallizes with:
- Stilbite or other zeolites on broad cavity surfaces.
- Calcite as rhombohedra, scalenohedra or later coatings.
- Prehnite as green globular aggregates.
- Quartz or chalcedony lining the original cavity.

Each association is mineralogically distinct and contributes differently to value. A transparent apophyllite crystal emerging from contrasting white stilbite may be more desirable than a larger but poorly composed cluster.

Traditional crystal practices associate clear apophyllite with reflection, openness and examining a situation without embellishment. Green material is commonly linked with growth and adjusting to change.
These interpretations arise from modern spiritual traditions and the material’s visual appearance. They are not measurable mineralogical effects.

Apophyllite Colors
Clear and White Apophyllite
Colorless to white apophyllite is the most familiar commercial material. Transparent crystals may resemble quartz but commonly show square cross-sections, pyramid-like terminations and pearly basal cleavage.
Milky or white areas can result from inclusions, fractures, growth zones or surface alteration. A white crystal is not automatically lower quality when its form and composition are exceptional.
Green Apophyllite
Green apophyllite is especially associated with Maharashtra, India. Colors range from nearly colorless mint to saturated grass green.
Some green is intrinsic to the crystal, while other specimens owe their appearance partly to celadonite or other inclusions. Color alone cannot establish fluorine content or exact species.
Fine green crystals on white stilbite or pale calcite can command significant premiums because of contrast and limited availability.
Pink, Yellow and Brown Apophyllite
Pale pink, peach, yellow and brown apophyllite occur less commonly in mainstream crystal shops. These colors may be connected with trace chemistry, inclusions or specific species compositions.
A strong unusual color should be evaluated for surface coatings, iron staining or misleading photography. Genuine apophyllite typically retains a vitreous, highly reflective appearance rather than a uniformly painted surface.

Maharashtra, India
The Deccan volcanic province of Maharashtra dominates the modern apophyllite specimen market. Basalt quarries and construction excavations around Pune, Nashik, Jalgaon, Ahilyanagar and neighboring districts have produced clear, white and green crystals.

New Jersey, United States
Traprock quarries at Prospect Park, Paterson, Millington and other New Jersey localities are historic sources of apophyllite and associated zeolites.
These specimens may be colorless, white or pale green and can carry additional value when accompanied by old labels from closed or inaccessible quarries.
Mont Saint-Hilaire, Québec
Mont Saint-Hilaire is famous for complex alkaline mineralogy. Apophyllite-group minerals occur there with analcime, aegirine, natrolite, serandite and numerous rare species.

Documentation is critical because many older mines are closed, inaccessible or represented only by legacy collections.
Apophyllite Crystal Forms
The familiar pseudocubic appearance results from a tetragonal crystal structure producing square prisms with prominent basal faces.

Is Apophyllite a Gemstone?
Transparent apophyllite can be faceted, but it is a specialist collector gem rather than a practical jewelry stone.
The material’s optical advantages include strong luster, good transparency and large clean crystal sections. Its disadvantages are more decisive: hardness is only 4.5–5, basal cleavage is perfect and heat can affect its hydrated structure.
Faceted stones are typically cut as:
- Step-cut squares and rectangles that fit prismatic rough.
- Ovals or cushions from damaged specimen crystals.
- Scissor cuts that emphasize brightness.
- Free-form collector cuts preserving maximum weight.
Routine ring wear is not recommended. Even a protected setting cannot prevent rapid facet abrasion from ordinary dust and accidental contact.

How to Identify Apophyllite
Useful visual clues include square or rectangular crystal outlines, pyramid terminations, vitreous faces and a pearly basal surface.
Apophyllite can resemble:
- Quartz, which is harder and lacks perfect basal cleavage.
- Calcite, which is softer and has rhombohedral cleavage.
- Fluorite, which is cubic but has octahedral cleavage.
- Zeolite crystals such as heulandite, which have different forms and optical behavior.
- Glass imitations with mold seams or gas bubbles.
Definitive species identification within the apophyllite group may require chemical analysis. Avoid assigning fluorapophyllite-(K) solely because the crystal is green.
Apophyllite Hardness and Durability
A hardness of 4.5–5 means apophyllite scratches more easily than feldspar, quartz, garnet and most jewelry gems.
Perfect basal cleavage can cause a crystal to separate into thin plates after pressure or impact. The mineral’s name refers to its tendency to flake or exfoliate when heated.

Can Apophyllite Go in Water?
A brief rinse may be acceptable for a stable crystal when every associated mineral and repair is also water-safe. Long soaking is unnecessary.
Water can enter cleavage cracks, weaken matrix, loosen repairs and leave residue on highly reflective faces. Indian specimens containing stilbite, calcite or delicate secondary minerals require care based on the entire assemblage.
Avoid hot water. Temperature change and dehydration are more serious concerns for apophyllite than for durable quartz.
How to Clean Apophyllite
Dust the specimen with a soft artist’s brush while supporting the matrix. Use minimal pressure around crystal edges and basal faces.
For stable material, a brief lukewarm rinse may remove loose dust. Dry the specimen without rubbing the crystals.
Do not use steam, ultrasonic cleaners, acids, abrasive powders or compressed air. Heat can promote dehydration and exfoliation, acid may attack associated calcite, and vibration can detach crystals.
How to Store Apophyllite
Store specimens in rigid boxes with support beneath the matrix. Leave clearance above pyramid terminations and exposed crystal corners.
Do not wrap a delicate cluster tightly in tissue. Fibers can catch under crystal edges and break them during unwrapping.
Keep apophyllite away from direct heat, hot display lights and rapid temperature changes. Stable room conditions are preferable to a sunny windowsill or humid bathroom.
Buying Apophyllite
Request clear photographs of all terminations, contact points and the underside of the matrix. Bright reflective faces can hide chips when photographed only from the front.
Ask the seller to disclose:
- The stated mineral species or whether “apophyllite” is used as a group name.
