Amber’s gemological data differ from those of crystalline minerals because fossil resin has no single crystal lattice or fixed mineral formula. GIA places its hardness at 2–2.5 and describes it as an organic gem with poor toughness.
What Is Amber?
Amber began as resin produced by ancient plants. Over geological time, burial, pressure, oxidation and polymerization converted suitable resin into a more stable fossil material.
Resin is not the same substance as ordinary tree sap. Sap transports water and nutrients through a plant, while resin is a protective organic secretion that can trap debris, microorganisms and small animals before hardening.

Where Amber Comes From
The Baltic coast remains the best-known commercial source. Material is recovered around the southeastern Baltic region, including coastal areas associated with Poland, Russia, Lithuania and neighboring countries. GIA notes that the Baltic coast bordering Germany, Poland and Russia remains an important source and that Baltic amber is generally more highly valued than Dominican material.
Dominican amber is principally associated with deposits north of Santiago de los Caballeros and northeast of Santo Domingo. It is particularly noted for biological inclusions and blue fluorescence, with important deposits dated broadly to the Miocene.
Myanmar amber is famous for substantially older Cretaceous inclusions, particularly material from northern Myanmar. Other established sources include the Simojovel area of Chiapas in Mexico, Indonesia, Ukraine, Sicily and the recently documented Phu Quoc deposit in Vietnam.
Origin can affect color, age, botanical chemistry, fluorescence and the kinds of inclusions present. It cannot be confirmed reliably from color alone; significant specimens may require infrared spectroscopy and other laboratory testing.
Amber Meaning and Symbolism
Amber has traditionally been associated with preservation, warmth, continuity and connection with the natural world. Its ability to preserve ancient organisms has also made it a symbol of memory, history and the passage of time.
Modern metaphysical traditions may associate amber with confidence, optimism or emotional comfort. These are traditional beliefs and personal interpretations, not scientifically demonstrated physical, psychological or medical effects.
A person may still use amber jewelry as a meaningful reminder of family history, patience or appreciation for natural processes without treating the material as a medical remedy.
Amber Colors and Varieties
Yellow, Gold and Cognac Amber
Yellow and golden-brown material dominates the commercial market. Transparent golden amber is commonly fashioned into cabochons and beads, while darker cognac-colored pieces are popular in larger pendants and carved forms.
GIA reports that reddish amber generally commands more interest than ordinary golden material, while golden colors are generally preferred over pale yellow when other quality factors are comparable.
White and Butterscotch Amber
White, cream and opaque butterscotch amber contains numerous microscopic bubbles or internal structures that scatter light. Fine pieces can show marbled yellow, cream and white patterns.
Because opaque material can be pressed, reconstructed or imitated with plastic, high-value white amber should be evaluated for natural structure and treatment disclosure.
Red Amber
Natural red and reddish-brown amber may result from oxidation, aging or the character of the original resin. Polished amber can also darken over time because cutting removes or thins the more weathered exterior surface and exposes material to further oxidation.
Blue Amber
Most blue amber does not have a uniformly blue body color. Its blue or greenish-blue appearance is primarily a fluorescence phenomenon that becomes visible under suitable illumination and against a dark background.
Commercial blue amber is particularly associated with the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Myanmar. Research has found measurable differences in fluorescence and absorption characteristics among material from these sources.
Green Amber
Some natural amber appears greenish because of inclusions, surface alteration or fluorescence. Bright transparent yellow-green material sold as “green amber” is frequently created through heat and pressure treatment, so natural-color claims require careful disclosure.

Is Amber a Gemstone?
Amber is accepted as an organic gemstone even though it is neither a mineral nor a crystal. Its low density allows cutters to produce large earrings, necklaces and pendants that remain relatively light compared with mineral gems of similar dimensions.
The material is usually fashioned as:
- Cabochons that preserve color and inclusions.
- Free-form polished pieces that follow the original rough.
- Beads drilled through thicker areas.
- Carvings and relief work.
- Flat slices used to display biological inclusions.
Faceting is uncommon because amber is soft, light and generally more attractive when its natural flow structures or inclusions remain visible. Transparent collector pieces are occasionally faceted, but they should not be evaluated by the same brilliance standards used for diamond, sapphire or garnet.
Amber is best suited to earrings, pendants, brooches and beads. It is a poor choice for an exposed daily-wear ring because ordinary household dust, harder jewelry and countertop contact can scratch the surface.

Amber Treatments and Composite Material
Heating amber in oil can improve apparent clarity and produce circular internal stress features commonly called sun spangles. Heat and pressure may also alter color, especially in commercial green material.
Pressed, reconstructed or consolidated amber is made by joining small fragments under heat and pressure. It contains real amber, but it is a composite product and normally sells for less than a comparable single natural piece.
Other modifications include:
- Surface dye that creates red, green or dark colors.
- Epoxy filling used to conceal cavities or reinforce weak areas.
- Backing or coating that changes the appearance of a thin piece.
- Modern insects inserted into resin or composite material.

How to Identify Real Amber
Amber’s low density, warm feel and resinous luster can provide useful clues, but no single home test proves authenticity. Plastic, copal, pressed amber and reconstructed products can imitate several of its familiar features.
A genuine biological inclusion is not automatically valuable. Perfectly positioned modern insects, large animals with no visible decomposition and obvious air gaps around an inclusion can indicate artificial assembly.
Ultraviolet fluorescence can help compare specimens, but fluorescence varies by origin and treatment. Saltwater floating tests are also inconclusive because some plastics float and some mounted or filled pieces behave unpredictably.

How to Clean and Care for Amber
Amber scratches easily and has poor toughness. GIA recommends warm water with mild soap and warns that prolonged light, heat and chemicals can darken, damage or alter the material.
Clean amber with a soft damp cloth or a brief wash in lukewarm mild soapy water. Dry it immediately with a lint-free cloth without rubbing aggressively.
Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam, alcohol, acetone, perfume, hairspray, chlorine, acids and abrasive polishing compounds. Heat can soften, burn or crack amber, while solvents may roughen or cloud the surface.

Buying Amber Responsibly
Ask the seller to disclose whether the piece is natural, pressed, heat-treated, dyed, filled or backed. A locality claim should be supported by supplier documentation or laboratory evidence rather than color alone.
For inclusion pieces, request photographs from several angles and under both transmitted and reflected light. Confirm whether the inclusion is naturally enclosed, surface-reaching, repaired or inserted into a cavity.
Be cautious when a seller describes ordinary amber as exceptionally ancient, blue, medicinal or museum grade without independent evidence. High-value purchases should come with a return policy and, where appropriate, a report from a qualified gemological laboratory.
