The Difference Between Diaspore Mineral and Gem Diaspore
Diaspore occurs widely as a component of bauxite and aluminum-rich metamorphic rocks. Most of that material is opaque, granular or unsuitable for cutting.

How Diaspore Forms

The Turkish Gem Deposit
The best-known color-changing gem material comes from the Milas region of Muğla Province in southwestern Turkey, particularly the İlbir or İlbirdağı area.
The crystals occur in diasporic metabauxite rather than a conventional pegmatite or alluvial gem gravel. Extraction therefore involves breaking hard host rock and following relatively limited crystal-bearing zones.
Large crystals can form, but usable cut yield remains low. Cleavage fractures, cloudy sections, thin blades and unfavorable orientation remove much of the apparent rough weight.
