Fire Opal: Color, Formation, Value, Treatments and Care

Fire Opal is transparent-to-translucent Opal with a yellow, orange, reddish orange or red body color. Some stones display spectral play-of-color, while others are valued entirely for their warm body color and clarity.

Body Color Defines Fire Opal

Fire Opal is primarily a body-color category.

A transparent orange Opal with no spectral flashes still qualifies. Conversely, a white Opal with intense red play-of-color is not Fire Opal because its body remains white.

This distinction separates two properties:

  • Body color: the stable yellow-to-red appearance of the material
  • Play-of-color: moving spectral flashes caused by ordered silica structures

What Causes the Orange and Red Color?

Minute iron-bearing inclusions are major contributors to Fire Opal’s yellow, orange and brownish-red body colors.

How Play-of-Color Forms
