What Is Azurite?

Azurite is a secondary copper mineral rather than a primary mineral that crystallizes directly from cooling magma.

It develops when oxygenated groundwater reacts with copper-bearing sulfides and carbonate-rich host rocks near the surface. The resulting chemical environment allows deep-blue azurite to form in fractures, cavities and oxidized ore zones.

Color is only one factor. A dark crystal with sharp form, brilliant luster and documented locality may be more valuable than a brighter but damaged specimen.

Azurite Pigment
