Why Hardness Is the Wrong Question
This is the concept that makes everything else make sense, and most people get it backwards.

Toughness is resistance to breaking, chipping, and fracturing. It’s a completely separate property, and it’s what carving depends on.
Consider diamond. Hardness 10, the hardest natural substance there is. And yet diamond has cleavage, and a well-placed tap will split one cleanly. Diamond is hard but not especially tough. You cannot carve a diamond figurine.
Now consider jade. Hardness 6 to 7, soft enough that dust scratches it. But jadeite and nephrite are made of interlocking fibrous crystals, like a mass of tangled felt. There’s no plane to split along and no easy path for a crack to travel. Jade is the toughest common gem material on earth, and it was used for axe heads in the Neolithic.
That’s why jade is the carving king and diamond isn’t.
1. Jade (Toughness: exceptional)
The greatest carving material there is, and it isn’t close.
“Jade” covers two minerals. Nephrite is slightly tougher and was the classic Chinese material for millennia. Jadeite is slightly harder, comes in more colors including the prized imperial green, and is generally more valuable.
Both share that interlocking fibrous structure, which means jade can be carved into impossibly thin, delicate, undercut forms that would shatter in any other stone. Chinese carvers have exploited this for over 5,000 years, producing linked chains and openwork spheres carved from single blocks.

2. Agate and Chalcedony (Hardness 7)
The workhorse of carving, and the classic cameo stone.
Agate is cryptocrystalline quartz, meaning microscopic interlocking crystals, which gives it good toughness alongside hardness 7. It’s abundant, cheap, and comes in banded layers.

3. Obsidian (Hardness 5–5.5)
Volcanic glass, and it behaves exactly like glass.
Obsidian carves beautifully to a mirror polish and takes fine detail. Its conchoidal fracture, breaking in smooth curved shells, is precisely what made it the finest tool material of the Stone Age. Knapped obsidian edges are sharper than surgical steel.

4. Lapis Lazuli (Hardness 5–6)
Five thousand years of carved history.
Lapis is a rock rather than a single mineral, mostly lazurite with calcite and pyrite. That deep ultramarine has been carved into scarabs, seals, and inlay since Sumer, and it was ground into the pigment ultramarine, once worth more than gold.

The catch: variable, since it’s a rock. Calcite veins are softer and can undercut. Often waxed or dyed.
5. Serpentine (Hardness 3–6)
The beginner’s stone, with a genuine hazard.
Serpentine is soft, cheap, abundant, and comes in lovely mottled greens. It’s often sold as “new jade” or “Korean jade,” which it isn’t. It carves easily with hand tools, making it a classic learning material.
The serious caution: some serpentine varieties contain asbestos (chrysotile is a serpentine mineral). Asbestos fibers cause mesothelioma and asbestosis. Buy carving serpentine from suppliers who confirm it’s asbestos-free, and never dry-cut it.
6. Soapstone / Steatite (Hardness 1–2.5)
The easiest carving stone there is.
Soapstone is mostly talc, the softest mineral on the Mohs scale. You can carve it with a knife, files, and sandpaper, with no power tools required. It’s the standard material for teaching carving and for children’s projects (with supervision).
It’s been used for Inuit sculpture, Chinese seals, and African carving traditions.
The catch: so soft it scratches with a fingernail. Finished pieces are decorative, not durable. Talc dust is also a respiratory irritant, so still wear a mask.
7. Malachite (Hardness 3.5–4) — With a Real Caution
Gorgeous banded green, and genuinely hazardous to work.
Malachite’s swirling bands are unmistakable, and it’s been carved into boxes, inlay, and objets for centuries. The Russian Malachite Room in the Winter Palace is the famous showcase.

8. Amber (Hardness 2–2.5)
Fossilised tree resin, warm and light.
Amber carves very easily, takes fine detail, and has been worked since prehistory. It’s warm to the touch and remarkably light, which suits large decorative pieces.
The catch: very soft, and it can crack with heat or age. It also dissolves in some solvents. Much “amber” on the market is copal (young resin) or plastic.
9. Fluorite (Hardness 4)
Beautiful, banded, and frustrating.
Fluorite’s purple-green-blue banding is spectacular, and it’s cheap. It’s the classic material for Blue John ornaments from Derbyshire.

Safety: Please Read This Properly

Crystalline silica dust causes silicosis, an incurable, progressive, and potentially fatal lung disease. Quartz-family stones — agate, jasper, carnelian, onyx, chalcedony, and rock crystal — are silicon dioxide. Grinding them dry produces exactly the dust that causes it. This is a genuine occupational disease that still kills stoneworkers today.
The rules that protect you:
Cut and grind wet, always. Water suppresses dust at the source. This is the single most important control.
Wear a proper respirator. Not a dust mask. A fitted respirator rated for fine particulates (P2/N95 minimum, better for prolonged work).
Ventilate. Work outdoors or with proper extraction.
Never dry-sweep. Sweeping re-suspends settled dust. Wet-wipe or use a HEPA vacuum.
Wear eye protection. Especially with obsidian, which shatters into razor shards.
Material-specific hazards: malachite dust is toxic (copper). Some serpentine contains asbestos. Cinnabar contains mercury and should not be worked at all by amateurs.
