
Gemstone Toughness vs Hardness: What Actually Breaks
Hardness and toughness are different properties, and confusing them is the most expensive mistake in gemstone buying. Hardness is scratch resistance. Toughness is resistance to breaking. They aren’t related, and a stone can be superb at one and poor at the other. Diamond is the hardest natural substance on earth and it can be split with a well-placed tap. Jade is soft enough to be scratched by dust, and it was used for axe heads.

Hardness: Will It Scratch?
Hardness is a stone’s resistance to being abraded — scratched, scuffed, dulled. It’s measured on the Mohs scale, which runs from talc at 1 to diamond at 10. Our gemstone hardness chart lists where common stones sit.
The number that actually matters is 7. Household dust contains fine quartz particles, and quartz is hardness 7. Every time you wipe a stone, push your hand across a desk, or simply let a ring sit in a dusty room, you’re rubbing quartz against it.
So 7 is the abrasion threshold. Below it, a stone will slowly dull from ordinary life whether or not you’re careful. Above it, dust cannot touch it.
That’s the whole practical meaning of hardness: it predicts how a stone looks after ten years of wear.
The Mohs Scale Lies to You
This trips up almost everyone, and it’s worth understanding.
The Mohs scale is ordinal, not linear. It ranks stones in order, but the gaps between numbers are wildly uneven.
Corundum is 9. Diamond is 10. That looks like a small step. In absolute terms, diamond is several times harder than corundum — a far bigger jump than the one from 8 to 9, which is itself bigger than 1 to 8 combined.
The scale only tells you what scratches what. A 7 scratches a 6. It does not tell you that 8 is “twice as tough as 4.” Nothing about the numbers is proportional.
That’s why 9 versus 10 matters much less in practice than the numbers suggest, and why the difference between 6 and 7 matters much more.
Toughness: Will It Break?
Toughness is a completely separate property: resistance to chipping, cracking, and fracturing under impact or pressure.
It has nothing to do with hardness. It depends on internal structure — cleavage planes, crystal arrangement, existing fractures, and how the atoms are bonded.
Diamond is the proof. Hardness 10, the hardest natural substance known. But diamond has cleavage — planes of weaker atomic bonding — and a knock at the right angle can split it cleanly. Jade is the opposite proof. Hardness 6 to 7, soft enough that dust abrades it. But jadeite and nephrite are built from interlocking fibrous crystals, like a mass of tangled felt. There’s no plane to split along and no easy path for a crack to travel.

Stability: The Forgotten Third Property
Nobody talks about this one, and it ruins more jewelry than either of the others.
Stability is resistance to light, heat, and chemicals. It’s independent of both hardness and toughness.

A stone can be hard, tough, and still ruined by a bottle of perfume.
The Toughness Ladder
Toughness is usually described in grades rather than numbers.
Exceptional: jade (jadeite and nephrite). In a class of its own.

Good: diamond (hardness 10, but cleavage), spinel, garnet, tourmaline.
Fair: emerald (fractured and oiled), tanzanite, peridot, moonstone, sphene.

Look at that list carefully. Topaz is hardness 8 — harder than emerald, harder than tanzanite — and its toughness is poor, because it has perfect basal cleavage. Fluorite is hardness 4 with cleavage in four directions. Meanwhile jade at 6 to 7 sits at the top.
Hardness and toughness genuinely do not track each other.
Which One Should You Care About?
It depends entirely on where the stone will live. This is the practical payoff.

How to Predict What Will Happen
A simple diagnostic that works.
Low hardness → it gets dull. Gradual, uniform, boring. The stone loses polish and life over years. Rarely dramatic, usually irreversible without recutting.
Low toughness → it chips or splits. Sudden, localized, dramatic. One bad knock and there’s a bite out of the girdle, or the stone is in two pieces.
Low stability → it changes. Fades, crazes, discolors, or leaks its filler.
So: dull means you chose the wrong hardness. Chipped means you chose the wrong toughness. Faded or cloudy means you ignored stability.
Why Your Stone Looks Dull (It Probably Isn’t Damaged)
Worth saying, because it saves people money.
If your stone is hardness 8 or above, it almost certainly hasn’t been abraded by anything you own. When a sapphire or diamond stops sparkling, it’s a film of skin oil, lotion, and soap on the back of the stone, blocking light from entering.
