GIA notes that some African amethyst, especially Zambian material, may show highly saturated raspberry-purple color and can contain more inclusions than some Brazilian material. Strong color may make those inclusions acceptable in the market.

Brazil is a major source of quartz and can produce amethyst in very large crystals and geodes. Other regions also supply attractive material with varying tone, crystal habit, zoning, and inclusion characteristics. Amethyst is not among the most heavily treated gems, but treatment does occur. Loose Amethyst Is Easier to Evaluate Than Mounted Amethyst
