Understanding Diamond Color Beyond the Letter Grade

Diamond color meaning becomes much clearer once the grading systems are separated.

D–Z grading measures increasingly visible normal-range color in natural diamonds. Fancy grading evaluates the presence and quality of distinct color. Laboratory-grown diamonds can reproduce many of the same visible hues, but their growth history, color causes, treatments and reporting conventions need to be identified separately.

For buyers, that means looking beyond a single letter.

Consider how the diamond appears face-up. Compare the color with the setting metal. Examine how cut and size influence warmth. Confirm whether the stone is natural or laboratory grown. Check whether color is natural or treated. Read the report issued for the actual diamond.
