Why These Two Get Compared

Because they’re the fire twins. Both are green, both are rare, and both have dispersion higher than diamond’s 0.044, which almost no other gem manages.

Sphene is doubly refractive, and strongly so. Light entering the stone splits into two rays. Look through the table at the back facet edges under magnification, and you’ll see them appear clearly doubled, blurred into two distinct lines. Sphene’s birefringence is high enough that the doubling is dramatic and unmistakable.

Demantoid is singly refractive, like all garnets. Its back facet edges stay crisp and single, no matter how you look.

Test 2: Hardness and Cleavage

The durability gap between these two is large, and it matters more than the fire similarity.

Demantoid is 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage. Softish for a garnet, but with no built-in plane of weakness.

Sphene is 5 to 5.5 with distinct cleavage. That’s genuinely soft, softer than window glass, and the cleavage means a sharp knock can split it cleanly.

Test 4: The Horsetail

Test 5: Luster and Character

Trained eyes use this as a first impression rather than a verdict.

Sphene has an adamantine to sub-adamantine luster, an almost oily, resinous brilliance that’s genuinely distinctive once you’ve seen it. Combined with the doubling, sphene often looks slightly “soft-edged” and molten.

Demantoid has a crisper, more vitreous-to-adamantine brilliance, and its facet edges read sharp.

Sphene also tends to show more yellow, brown, and olive tones alongside green, while fine demantoid is typically a purer chromium green.

Where They Come From

Sphene (titanite) is found in Madagascar, Pakistan, Brazil, Austria, Italy, and Sri Lanka, among others. Madagascar and Pakistan supply much of the fine gem material.

Demantoid comes principally from Russia’s Ural Mountains (the historic, prestigious source, usually horsetailed), Namibia’s Green Dragon mine (brighter, cleaner, often larger, typically horsetail-free), and Madagascar. Also Iran, Italy, and Pakistan.

Treatments

Each has a real case, and it depends entirely on what you want.

Buy demantoid if you want the maximum fire, the rarest green garnet, genuine Fabergé-era history, the horsetail mystique, and reasonable durability, and the budget is there. It’s the collector’s benchmark.

Buy sphene if you want extraordinary fire on a real-world budget, you’re happy with a pendant or earrings rather than a daily ring, and you like the idea of owning something almost nobody recognizes. Sphene delivers perhaps 90% of demantoid’s fire for perhaps 10% of the price.
