That flatness is the giveaway. A cleaved surface looks almost polished, because the split followed an atomic plane rather than tearing through the structure.

Cleavage Is Not Hardness

Cleavage is internal. It’s about what happens when force gets past the surface.

Compare two stones:

Topaz. Hardness 8 — harder than emerald, harder than tanzanite, harder than quartz. It has perfect basal cleavage in one direction. Knock it right and a flat slice comes off. Jewelers see chipped topaz constantly.

Quartz. Hardness 7 — softer than topaz. No cleavage at all. It fractures conchoidally instead, which takes far more force and rarely produces catastrophic loss.

The softer stone is the safer one. That’s cleavage.

Cleavage Grades

Mineralogists rate cleavage by how easily and cleanly it splits.

Perfect. Splits readily into flat, smooth planes. Topaz, fluorite, calcite, selenite, kunzite, moonstone and the other feldspars, diamond.

Distinct or good. Splits noticeably but less readily. Tanzanite, emerald and the beryls (basal), sphene.

Imperfect or poor. Barely splits. Tourmaline, peridot.

None. No planes of weakness whatsoever. Corundum (sapphire and ruby), quartz, garnet, spinel, jade, opal.

Cleavage Directions

Directions matter as much as grade, because more directions means more ways to fail.

Fracture and Parting: The Two Lookalikes

Both get confused with cleavage, and both mean something different.

Fracture

Fracture is breakage that doesn’t follow a plane. It happens in any direction, because there’s no structural weakness to exploit.

The most common type is conchoidal fracture — a smooth, curved, shell-like break, like glass. Quartz and obsidian are the classic examples.

Parting

The key difference: cleavage is a property of the species; parting is a property of the individual stone. All topaz cleaves. Only some corundum shows parting.

This matters for sapphire and ruby specifically. Corundum has no cleavage, but it can show parting along growth planes in rare cases. Tell your jeweler if your stone has cleavage. Three operations put stones at real risk:

Ultrasonic cleaning. Vibration can propagate an existing feather along a cleavage plane. Never ultrasonic a tanzanite, kunzite, or fluorite.

Setting and tightening. Prong pressure applied along a cleavage direction can split a stone during setting. This is a genuine cause of loss, and it’s why experienced setters handle topaz and tanzanite differently.

Heat during repairs. A torch near a cleavage stone, or sudden thermal shock, can crack it.

Cleavage Is Also Useful
