Why Almost Every Sapphire Is Heated
This surprises people, so let’s be plain about it.
Sapphire comes out of the ground mostly unattractive. Much rough is pale, cloudy with silk, or muddy in color. Heating fixes that: at temperatures over 1,000°C, and often far higher, the stone’s color intensifies and its rutile silk dissolves into the lattice, clearing the stone.
The practice is ancient — heat treatment of corundum goes back centuries, long before anyone understood the chemistry.
Today roughly 95% of sapphires traded are heated. It’s assumed unless stated otherwise. If you own a sapphire, it is almost certainly heated, and that’s not a problem. It’s how the gem gets to market.
Heat Treatment: Accepted, Permanent, Fine
What it does. Intensifies color, dissolves silk, improves clarity.
Is it permanent? Yes. Heat treatment doesn’t fade, wash out, or reverse. It’s a genuine, stable change to the stone’s structure. You never need to re-treat a heated sapphire, and normal wear, sunlight, and cleaning won’t affect it.
Is it disclosed? In practice, heat is the assumed baseline. A responsible seller will confirm it if asked, and any lab report will state it.

Unheated: A Real Premium, Sometimes Worth It
Unheated stones command 2 to 5 times heated prices, because fine material that never needed the furnace is genuinely scarce.
But here’s the nuance that saves money. That premium concentrates in fine colors. Unheated status on a mediocre, grayish, or dark stone adds very little real value, because nobody wants a mediocre stone regardless of its treatment history.
Some sellers price unheated as though it’s a quality grade. It isn’t. It’s a rarity grade. A magnificent heated sapphire is a better stone than a dull unheated one, and it will look better on your hand every single day.
Who should pay the premium: collectors, investors, and people buying fine stones where provenance is part of the point.

Diffusion: The One That Matters
This is where money actually gets lost, so it deserves detail.
What it is. Elements are driven into the stone at high temperature to create or intensify color that wasn’t there. Two main types:
Titanium (surface) diffusion. Titanium is diffused into the surface layer, creating blue color that may be only skin-deep. Recutting or even aggressive repolishing can remove it. This is the worst case.
Beryllium (lattice) diffusion. Beryllium penetrates deeper and can transform color dramatically — turning pale or unattractive corundum into vivid yellow, orange, or padparadscha-like pink-orange. It caused a genuine market scandal when it appeared, because it was initially undisclosed and labs couldn’t detect it easily.
Why it matters. Diffused stones are worth dramatically less than heated ones — a fraction, not a discount. The color isn’t the stone’s own.
Is it legal? Yes, provided it’s disclosed. Undisclosed diffusion is fraud.
Can you spot it yourself? Sometimes. Immersion in a liquid can reveal color concentrated at facet junctions in surface-diffused stones. But reliable detection is a laboratory job, especially for beryllium. Don’t trust your own eye on this.
The practical rule: for any sapphire where the price implies fine natural color, get a report. For cheap sapphire, assume the risk is priced in.
Fracture Filling
Lower-grade sapphire is sometimes filled to hide fractures.
Glass filling and lead-glass filling fill surface-reaching cracks, dramatically improving apparent clarity. This is much more common in ruby than sapphire, but it exists.
Why it matters practically: filled stones are fragile in a way sapphire otherwise never is. The filler can be damaged by heat, ultrasonic cleaners, and even household chemicals. A jeweler’s torch during a repair can wreck it.

Lattice vs Surface: Why the Distinction Matters
A point worth understanding, since sellers may blur it.
Surface diffusion creates a thin colored skin. Cut into it, and you find pale corundum underneath. If the stone is ever recut or repolished after damage, the color can be lost.
Lattice diffusion penetrates deeper, so the color survives normal recutting.
Both are worth far less than heated stones. But surface diffusion is the more precarious of the two, and it’s why the question “how deep is the color?” is a legitimate one.
What About Lab-Grown?
Not a treatment, but it belongs in the same conversation because it’s the other disclosure question.
Lab-grown sapphire is chemically and physically identical to natural — same hardness 9, same durability, same colors. It’s been made since about 1902 via the Verneuil flame-fusion process, one of the oldest synthetics.

Use these words. Vagueness in the answer is itself information.
- “Is it heated or diffused?” The essential question. Not “is it treated?”
- “If diffused, is it surface or lattice?” Tests whether they actually know.
- “Is it fracture-filled?” Affects care and durability, not just price.
- “Natural or lab-grown?” Should be answered instantly.
- “Which lab issued the report?” Only matters for fine stones — but then it matters a lot.
A dealer who answers these crisply is worth buying from. One who deflects to “all sapphires are treated, don’t worry about it” is technically saying something true and practically dodging the question.
