Agate is a patterned form of chalcedony, the microcrystalline variety of Quartz. What Counts as Agate?

The parent material is chalcedony, whose microscopic Quartz fibers grow in dense interlocking aggregates.

Strict geological definitions commonly emphasize visible banding. Rhythmic layers can follow the wall of a cavity, form flat horizontal levels, surround a central void, or create angular fortification patterns.

Banded Agate

Banded Agate is the central structural category. It contains repeated Chalcedony layers deposited during changing conditions inside a cavity or fracture.
